Down to this..and the return of more thoughts from the edge with Odin

vikings_stadium
So 50 years of Vikings football comes down to one last weekend. Sad isn't it? I know everyone has their own opinion of how to fund this project, but one thing is clear. The elected officials who have the fate of not only Vikings fans in their hands, but the collective legacy of 50 years of Vikings memories dangling by a thread, are about to decide whether the Vikings get a stadium, or not. So, the passing of the proverbial buck from previous legislative bodies who clearly didn't have the balls to make a decision and were more worried about re-election (and should have completed this long ago), have pushed the State, the Vikings, the fans and the NFL into a corner that we may not all come out of alive. Consider that this may be the final time we get to talk about saving the Vikings.

It is of my opinion that if this bill doesn't pass, the NFL and the Vikings ownership group will use this as a lesson for all to see. The league is certainly tired of dealing with this and although everyone wants to keep the natural rivalries together, they may not have a choice but to re-align the divisions and create a new NFC North. One without a team in Minnesota. The Wilf family may indeed decide not to leave, but they could and I wouldn't blame them one bit. People forget that this is a business. A business where young men get paid extraordinary sums of money to play a game. Is it wrong with how much they get compensated, perhaps. Are our collective priorities out of touch with the far more pressing issues, perhaps. The Wilfs have been patient, been courteous and tirelessly waited their turn. Their time is up and the focus and spotlight will be on the State Capitol on Monday. But one thing is for certain, the people who are in charge of the fate we are all watching so closely, have it in their power to save the Vikings and the fans from watching what the Colts did in Baltimore in 1984. What the Houston Oilers did before that. What the North Stars did and what the Lakers did. They left town. You would think that with Minnesota having suffered this indignity TWICE, we'd get our act together, but no. We are left with complete asses (sorry, but your respect is earned, not a given), that have chosen to respect the wishes of their true bosses in Washington, DC, and not listen to the people in their own state. I am speaking of Rep. Kurt Zellers in particular, the speaker of the house of representative in Minnesota. He leads a group (GOP) who happens to have the MAJORITY on the State legislature, both the House and the Senate. Yet, he's leaving the stadium issue up to the MINORITY party (DFL) to get the stadium bill passed. Nice. Thanks for standing up GOP and showing your TRUE nature. I am stunned that no-one party is claiming the mantle as the PARTY WHO SAVED THE VIKINGS FROM LEAVING, if they are truly worried about re-election.

It is called leadership. Something people in office simply cannot relate to nowadays. They are told what to do, what to say and how to get re-elected. It's a pretty simple formula. Raise shit-tons of cash, run for elected office that pays well below compared to what you have raised and listen and legislate in the favor of whoever throws the most money at you for your re-election coffers. In the Vikings case, we have gone through 2 presidential elections and multiple mid-term elections. Because what happens on the state level really doesn't matter to the peeps in Washington, DC. All they care about is power. The power to control and run our lives. I know this seems like I'm kind of rambling, and maybe I am a little, but I have been in Asgard for the last several months, and it was getting kind of stale. And I have a lot to get off my chest. I am so sick and tired of the absolute frauds we have running things. As our former Governor once said, when in doubt, follow the money. I could really get into it, but I won't. I only want resolution of this issue. Which we will get on Monday, May 7, 2012.

On this Monday, Purple Monday, we will see once and for all, who is with the Vikings and who is not. When I hear Zellers claim he wants them to stay but won't do anything to help them stay, I get the feeling that jackasses like him have GOT TO GO. I will ensure that we all know who had our backs, and who did not. This will be easy to see. But in the end, if these idiots don't understand what is at stake, they shouldn't be elected officials anyway. They should go back to selling shoes or shoveling kennels or whatever else they did before getting the bright idea of being a public official. Which leads me to think we shouldn't call them public officials any more. They certainly do not listen to us anyway, so maybe we should call them what they are, private shills. Does that sound bitter? Here's the honest truth. It will cost us money to keep the Vikings. But the brain-wizards in St. Paul can't see the forest beyond the trees. All they can see is what is ahead of them. A tough vote that will cost them re-election. They are in a no win scenario in their eyes. But the best part is, that if the Vikings do leave, the people in St. Paul assume that the NFL would get us another team. Guess again. Why would they? We can't get our shit together politically. And what really chaps my ass is that it would cost 3 TIMES more money to not only get a team, but A STADIUM as well. Now that is governing!!! Wait until it's super expensive, then we can vote for it. Are you kidding me?!!

And so we just completed the 2012 NFL draft of what could very well be the last NFL draft we get to experience as Vikings fans in Minnesota. I will call my legislators and urge them to vote for the stadium, as we all should and I whole-heartedly encourage you all to do as well. But in the end, the fate of everything Purple, lies within the soul of every elected official in Minnesota. We will be able to see how everyone voted and know who to go after relentlessly, because as you all know, to quote Apollo Creed in Rocky 3, "there is no tomorrow'! Make this weekend count, write, email, call do what you can. Becuase, the one thing these people don't unerstand is that we could all be stuck watching Packer football on Sunday, every Sunday for the next 20-30 years. Ouch!

Draft Party? Or Draft Regrets?

Matt_Kalil_Vikings_Draft_NightHere we are...the eve of the 2013 NFL Draft. Has a team ever been in the position the Vikings are? We have the THIRD pick in the draft and the shot at a handful of almost "sure things"...yet every Viking fan I know, thinks the Vikings will screw it up. I find this odd, because 90% of every Vikings fan I know, thinks we should TRADE the pick. I put a little thought in to this, and even though the Vikings blew their chances at winning the RGIII or Luck Lottery, they are in a spot not many teams get to be in.

Yes, the Vikings have holes every where. Offensive line, secondary, wide receiver...and others. Theres top tier talent at each position that the Vikings need, and you know who they are. Why are we thinking the Vikings are going to screw it up? The only way they CAN screw it up...is to trade down. The chances of the Vikings getting an offer good enough to trade, are about the same as the Vikings playing the Browns in the Super Bowl next year. It won't happen. Why? Because they have a sure thing in place.

The Vikings aren't one piece of the puzzle away from the glory land. There's a reason we're picking 3rd tomorrow night...it's because we aren't a good football team. However, we have some tools that can turn a bad football team in to a legit one real quick. The four places you need an anchor at to make a football team a solid "dynasty", is quarterback (TBD with Ponder), running back (Peterson), left tackle (zero) and shut down secondary (big zero). The Vikings are in the best win/(probably)win they'll ever be in. Either you get a no brainer in Kalil, or you get an extremely awesome trade in return for the 3rd pick, in which you probably get a couple guys who are not as much of a no brainer...but still really good.

This worries me for two reasons. One, I don't trust the Vikings in picking up additional picks and making good use of them. Unless we get a Juilo Jones or RGIII type deal...you could end up making a mess out of that trade, only to be the team that trades away from a guy who becomes a 10x pro bowler. Second, there's a good chance we'll be picking in the top 10 in the 2013 draft. This is our chance to lock up one of the four positions you need an anchor...and use this chance to get Kalil and be glad we didn't have to sweat the decision.

Will Kalil be a 10x pro bowler? We don't know...but no one will say "see, I told you he'd be terrible" if he doesn't pan out. Next year, we can take our top 10 pick to get a QB (if Ponder doesn't show he can play), a CB (we all know there will be two or three of them that are projected first rounder), or another position. What if the Vikings pick HIGHER than 10 in 2013? AWESOME....that means we had a decent year and guys proved to us that they can play. Again, I see it as a win/win. And to top that off, the Seahawks will pay just about everything they've got in 2013 to get Matt Barkley. The higher our pick next year, the more leverage we'll have.

I'm not trying to be negative nancy, but you have to view this as a win/win (that might come with a lot of losses this year). If Ponder shows he can play in the NFL as a legit signal caller, then we can use our first pick at WR or the secondary. If we get lucky and land a secondary guy in rounds two or three this year and they show some promise...that takes pressure off one of those anchor positions.

Overall, I hope the Vikings land Kalil. The only way I'm OK with them trading the third pick, is if they trade down a few spots near St. Louis and take whom ever they don't between Blackmon and Kalil. Should be fun this year to watch our first few draft picks regardless of what the Vikings do, I'd just rather be on side of the fence that isn't nervous about if they can play or not.

The Vikings are on the clock....

Finkle is Einhorn and Einhorn is Finkle?

There has been a lot hype and buzz about Memphis' Dontari Poe and his crazy good combine numbers. But I may have uncovered a bigger story...

In recent rock music news, Josey Scott decided to leave his role as lead singer of Saliva to pursue a "christian rock solo project". I'm no detective...but it appears to me that Josey Scott changed race and decided to give it a go at trying to make the NFL. Both from Tennesse, both are large men...? (see below)
